Our Story

When the frogs begin their spring chorus across Coonawarra’s wetlands, we know the vines are waking, and a new vintage is on its way. That sound, gentle, rhythmic, and full of promise, captures what we love about winemaking: renewal, connection, and the quiet anticipation of something extraordinary.

Founded by Bryce and Sonia Blacker, Howling Frog Wines was born from a shared love of the land and a lifelong appreciation for the art and science of wine. Growing up among South Australian vineyards. Bryce in the Barossa Valley, Sonia in Coonawarra, we were shaped by regions where wine isn’t just made; it’s lived.

Though our careers led us into the corporate world, our hearts never left the land and the vineyard. The dapper frog in our logo reminds us of that connection, a symbol of nature’s charm and optimism, and of the character that emerges when patience meets craft.

Our relationship with the Wine Innovation Cluster (WIC), a joint venture between the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) and the University of Adelaide, is central to our approach. It brings together our carefully selected South Australian fruit with experienced winemakers, the latest research and contemporary vinification techniques. Together, we explore how to bring out the best in each parcel of fruit, creating small-batch wines that express their region, variety and vintage, with Coonawarra at the heart of our premium range.
